iFund is an investment fund created by KPCB (Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers) to invest in iPhone oriented start-ups. It has a US$100 Million pool and has already invested in 5 companies: Whrrl (whose parent company is Pelago), iControl, Gogii, Ngmoco and another unnamed (yet) company.

While Whrrl is a location-based service and iControl is a remote-monitoring one, Gogii and Ngmoco are gaming companies about to launch this fall.

GoGii Games was started by the founders of Jamdat Mobile which has received $5 Million from KPCB. Gogii is concentrated on casual games that will be both online and based on social networks, targeting the iPhone primarily.

Ngmoco is a company created by KPCB by bringing a few former EA seniors together. Bing Gordon, formerly chief creative officer of EA, is on the board and Neil Young (no, not THAT one…) is the CEO. Neil was on the team of games such as Sims 2 and the up-coming Spore. Also, Bing Gordon is on the board of Zynga as well, a company KPCB also invested in and which concentrated on making a games network which is cross-social-networks. Thus, it is likely the new compnay is going to play a role in facebook/myspace/etc, as well as on the iPhone.

According to the NYT, iFund investments range from $100K to $15 million, and KPCB already invested between $5M to $8M in these companies.

It would be interesting to see how things will go for these companies and how different will they be.

N-Gage gets developers to talk… in a Sauna!

Nokia never had it easy with pushing N-Gage. It wasn’t doing good when it was first introduced as a weird-looking gaming device (without even MIDP 2.0, which was already available at the time on other devices).

Nokia then introduced the N-Gage as a gaming platform available on a range of devices and started pushing the gamedev community to produce games (one example).

Still, with all the recent buzz in the mobile gaming industry going to the iPhone, Nokia needed something else to draw the attention of developers.

Can that something be a cool video-cast? A developers talkshow?

Nokia has released the first episode of it’s Sauna Talk, where host Arnold Farber interview developers in… well… a sauna. It seems there are 2 other episodes about to be released but you can already enjoy the first episode featuring N-Gage’s Miikka Skaffari:

“Get the latest buzz on the N-Gage platform in an exclusive interview with Miikka Skaffari, Head of Developer Product Management. Learn about this latest mobile technology with host Arnold Farber as he inquires about the new tools, APIs, and the SDKs offered to developers through the N-Gage platform.”

I personally think this is an excellent show. The idea is great and looks very cool in video. It just left to see how non-saumi people handle the Sauna interview.. Way to go Nokia. Great stuff.
